A loose or corroded bracket, rubber hanger, or connector, may allow a muffler to rattle
This excessive movement may affect other components which can result in more than an annoying noise if left unattended. If the muffler is hanging lower than normal, there's also a risk it could break off by hitting a bump or going over railroad tracks.
Though it is possible a muffler rattle may be fixed by tightening bolts or replacing a broken hanger, there may be corrosion present which might be bad enough to require component replacement
